Industrial Applications: It is a key solvent in the manufacture of plastics (like polycarbonates and acrylics), synthetic fibers, lacquers, and varnishes. It serves as a heavy-duty degreaser for metal preparation before painting or soldering and is used to dissolve two-part epoxies and superglue before they harden.

Laboratory Applications: The most common use is for cleaning and rinsing laboratory glassware and equipment to remove organic residues and water, as it is completely miscible with water and evaporates quickly without leaving residue. It is also used as a polar aprotic solvent in organic synthesis and in chromatography techniques.
